Husband and wife Rick and Brandi Dixon stand on the foundation of what used to be inside their home. They lost their house, all of their possessions inside, a car that also washed away and one of their two businesses to flooding. McKinleyville sits on a sort of peninsula, surrounded by a horseshoe curve of Buffalo Creek. When the creek rose suddenly on Sept. 17, residents had about 20 minutes to get to higher ground.

Megan's uncle, Lars Tiffany, smiles behind. 120 patients spent Christmas (many with family members and friends) in Children's Hospital; the patients were given special bags filled with donated toys to help make their holiday a little brighter.

She is a volunteer with Animal Friends in New Ken; when Katrina struck she traveled with a friend from Apollo down to Mississippi and brought back 59 former pets rescued from the storm: puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens. She decided to not go back for more until she adopted out every one of them: She has four cats left.

Duquesne, PA--shot8/1/06-- Suzanne Rudy of Johnstown kisses her daughter, Kaleigh Owens, 6, at Kaleigh's home in Duquesne Tuesday afternoon. Kaleigh Owens was with her mother on June 8, looking for a pet dog at the Humane Society shelter there. The Alaskan malamute she was looking at adopting ended up attacking Kaleigh on the street outside, biting off the tip of her nose and leaving numerous scars on her face. She has been undergoing surgery and counseling ever since, and her parents have hired a lawyer to deal with the Humane Society.
